What Republicans should really fear.

Watching Keith a few minutes ago discussing the scare tactics being used by the far right, health care profiteer funded AstroTurf groups and the far radical right, I had a “Meta” thought: There is one thing that Republicans should really fear: That the use of scare tactics might result in the total marginalization of the Republican party!

We all know that the Republican party is in trouble. I for one believe strongly in the need for a loyal opposition in our two party system, and like it or not, the Republicans are the closest thing we in the USA have to a loyal opposition right now. Unfortunately, their current loyalty appears to be to themselves and the far right lunatics, rather than loyally contributing a differing opinion to mainstream political discourse.

The current scare tactics are serving to further marginalize the GOP. If it’s not reversed, and soon, the GOP will shrink to such a crazed, unthinking base that they won’t have any hope of recovering as a party.

While my own political beliefs tend towards wanting to scrap our winner take all (sometimes not even the majority winner), 2 party system in favor of a proportionally represented parliamentary system, I’m fairly certain it’s not going to happen in my lifetime. Too bad – as such a system would force cooperation and loyal opposition as learned discourse. While I don’t doubt the sincerity of the Democrats, I myself hold some small fears that an unopposed Democratic party could easily find itself lurching towards insanity itself. Without a loyal opposition, and with even the disloyal opposition marginalized, the Democratic party could be in absolute power, and I’m sorry I can’t cite the origin, but:

Power Corrupts. Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely.

So Republicans should be fearful…fearful of the scare tactics that are marginalizing their party. I share that fear.
